In October, 1985, restored Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 made her first appearance on the famed New River Train operated out of Huntington, West Virginia, by the Collis P. Huntington Chapter of the National Railway historical Society.
We climb aboard for a ride behind steam on the mainline, as the 1944 Lima puts on quite a show as we ride the train from Huntington to Hinton, West Virginia.
The program opens with #765 hot at the old C&O depot in Huntington. After the engine moves around the yard the day before her mainline outing, we see the New River Train barking out of Huntington before moving to the on board sequence.
The majority of this program was shot from one of the coaches toward the front of the train, with a windproofed microphone outside the car to capture the sounds of the big 2-8-4 working hard with a long train.
Partway to Hinton, we stop for a photo run near Sewell before continuing eastbound.
This program is geared toward fans of mainline steam that like to hear a big locomotive working hard, as the highlight of this program is the soundtrack. The microphone captured the sounds of the big 2-8-4 hard at work, with nary a rumble of wind noise.
