The 567 engine is THE diesel that most directly brought about the downfall of the steam locomotive. Appearing first in switchers and passenger locomotives, the 567’s application in the “F” series of freight locomotives sold the railroads on the diesel. The reliability of the 567 also resulted in the dominance of the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors that lasted for nearly forty years.
This production features the sounds of early E.M.D. diesels in SW, GP, E and F models. Trackside sounds are featured, along with recordings made on board locomotives.
On board recordings include a cab ride on a Monon F unit belonging to the Indiana Transportation Museum, a glimpse in the engine rooms of a former Pennsylvania Railroad E-8 and a Nebkota Railway FP9, plus rides on Chicago & Northwestern and Nickel Plate Road GP units.
Trackside recordings find GP units in freight service on Illinois Central and Canadian National, and SW1200 operating on a shortline, as well as F and GP units pulling the “Fair Train” near Indianapolis, Indiana.
