Presenting railroad operations in the 21st Century
The Illinois Central: Four Years After The Merger
Four years after the merger of the Illinois Central Railroad into the Canadian National system, we travel a segment of the Mainline of Mid America to take a look at day to day operations. In this program, we start at Centralia, Illinois, and move south along the Centralia Subdivision. Along the way, we stop at every town until we reach Wetaug, Illinois. Wetaug is the last passing siding north of Cairo, Illinois, the very southern tip of the state.
Night Trains looks at the railroad scene in urban, small town and rural areas, all between sunrise and sunset. The first portion of the program covers the Amtrak and Metra commuter traffic at Chicago’s Union Station as the January sun sets. Then we move into rural and small town settings, catching mainline and switching action. There are high speed freight and passenger trains, trains moving at slow speeds through junctions, and a local crew working a coal loadout.
This program takes a look at the action on the former Missouri Pacific line between Chester and Thebes, Illinois. We visit many of the scenic highlights along the line, including the Thebes bridge and the riverfront trackage in Chester. We visit nearly every town and village along the route, and rural scenic areas such as the Pine Hills and the Big Muddy River bridge at Aldridge.
